Os EUA querem maior presença das Nações Unidas no Líbano para supervisionar a cessação das hostilidades no país.
“Apoiamos a sua capacidade de atacar militantes e degradar a infraestrutura do Hezbollah, mas estamos bem conscientes das muitas ocasiões no passado em que Israel se envolveu no que pareciam ser operações limitadas e permaneceu durante meses ou anos”, destacou, em conferência de imprensa, o porta-voz do Departamento de Estado, MatthewMiller.
As declarações coincidem com o primeiro aniversário dos ataques de 7 de outubro do grupo islamita Hamas contra Israel, dia em que militantes palestinianos mataram cerca de 1.200 pessoas e sequestraram 251, e após o qual as forças israelitas empreenderam uma ofensiva na Faixa de Gaza que já provocou 41.900 mortos.
EUA pedem cessar-fogo
Miller reiterou o desejo do seu Governo de um cessar-fogo e sublinhou que esta cessação das hostilidades não pode ser unilateral.
“Queremos um cessar-fogo que devolva os reféns a casa, alivie o sofrimento do povo palestiniano e permita que a ajuda humanitária chegue a Gaza”, destacou o porta-voz do Departamento de Estado.
Os Estados Unidos, acrescentou, também querem “um acordo sobre o caminho político a seguir que garanta que os palestinianos possam eleger os seus próprios líderes e que o Hamas não continue a reinar como uma organização terrorista de Gaza sobre Gaza”.
“E, em última análise, que Gaza e a Cisjordânia sejam reunificadas como uma nação independente”, sublinhou. Miller deixou claro que “enquanto Israel estiver atolado em conflito em Gaza e enquanto estiver a lidar com uma situação instável na sua fronteira norte e com agitação e insegurança na Cisjordânia, a sua segurança nunca melhorará”.
Israel tem atacado o grupo xiita Hezbollah através da fronteira libanesahá quase um ano e, na passada segunda-feira, após uma semana de intensos bombardeamentos contra o sul e leste do país, anunciou o envio de tropas para o sul do Líbano, para desmantelar milícias.
Desde essa altura, pelo menos 11 soldados israelitas morreram em combate, segundo dados divulgados pelo Exército israelita.
Os intensos bombardeamentos israelitas – concentrados sobretudo no sul e leste do Líbano, mas também na capital, Beirute – já fizeram mais de 2.000 mortos e um milhão de deslocados, segundo as autoridades libanesas.
