Mário Centeno foi prudente nos comentários devido ao Orçamento do Estado, mas deixou avisos ao Governo e alertou para o risco de défice orçamental.
Mário Centeno não descarta uma candidatura à Presidência da República. Entretanto, vestindo o fato de governador do Banco de Portugal, alerta que pode voltar a ocorrer o défice orçamental, afirmando que, em 30 anos, o Estado nunca gastou tanto dinheiro como agora.
“Este é um momento delicado e espero que percebam também a minha posição e do Banco de Portugal. Não é só este ano, é todos os anos em outubro, o mês do orçamento”, disse Mário Centeno.
O momento é sensível, pelo que Mário Centeno prefere a via da prudência, até porque os últimos meses já revelam uma expansão como nunca se viu em mais de 30 anos.
“Antecipa-se uma variação negativa do saldo estrutural ao longo de todo este horizonte. Há muitos anos que Portugal não tinha variações de saldos estruturais negativos sucessivos na administração pública e, na verdade, desde 1992 que a despesa pública corrente não subia tanto como está a subir em 2024”, referiu, ainda, o governador do Banco de Portugal.
Em junho, já Mário Centeno tinha alertado que o risco de défice era real, devido às medidas anunciadas pelo Governo e aprovadas pela oposição. Quatro meses depois, a avaliação mantém-se, apesar de neste boletim económico não constar nenhuma referência escrita sobre o assunto, porque o momento, como diz Centeno, é “delicado”.
As questões fraturantes em torno da discussão do Orçamento do Estado entre o Partido Socialista e o Governo são a descida de impostos como o IRS Jovem e o IRC.
“Como é que podemos, ao mesmo tempo, cortar impostos e aumentar a despesa? Acho que a discussão é essa”, disse Centeno.

Mário Centeno tem sido um dos nomes apontados à esquerda para as presidenciais de 2026. O ainda governador do Banco de Portugal não descarta uma eventual candidatura, mas, por enquanto, prefere uma não resposta.
O mandato de Centeno à frente do Banco de Portugal termina no próximo verão e não deverá ser reconduzido no cargo. As eleições presidenciais acontecem seis meses depois.
